For nearly 100 years Daniel Metals has been a leader in the steel fabrication business! From the start Daniel has been known as an innovator and problem solver in the industry. Around 1900, Founder William Homer Daniel was a master mechanic for Tennessee Coal and Iron. At a time when hundreds of workers were being killed in industrial accidents each year because of falls and being dragged into equipment, Homer Daniel began experimenting with woven wire technology. He developed enclosures from woven wire which protected workers from big machinery and greatly improved safety industry wide. This was the first Daniel of many innovations and inventions to reach beyond the borders of home.
Initially, Homer Daniel went into business for himself in 1907 to manufacture his newly patented cutoff valve developed for municipal water systems. Five years later he reorganized the company to manufacture his latest invention: a machine to make ice cream cones. (He later sold the rights to Barber Dairies). From there the company gradually developed into a diversified iron and steel fabricator manufacturing fire escapes, porch railings, mesh fencing, screens, trellises, and toolroom enclosures. During this period Daniel also began creating ornate fencing for cemetaries around the country and patented residential burglar bars and commercial metal expanding gates for business theft protection before leaving the company in the 1930's.
Homer Daniel's son, William Harry Daniel, took over the company at this point and began shifting the company's focus in a more commercial direction. Daniel experienced steady growth and recognition under his leadership and upon his retirement in the 1970's his son, James Daniel took over as president. Currently James Daniel is the CEO and his son-in-law, Joey Dailey serves as COO.
Through the years the Daniel family has been committed to quality and excellence. In 1990, James Daniel realized the changing climate in technology and the need for updated facilities and equipment. He moved the operation from the West side of downtown Birmingham and built a state of the art production facilty in Trussville. The main plant is two and one half football fields long and 150 feet wide. This gave us the opportunity to add equipment and machinery to handle more intricate and complex fabrication challenges. Along with the main plant facility we added a service building to house our installation operation and a sand blasting facility to aid in finishing processes. The office was originally 6500 square feet and in the year 2000 we added 2500 square feet to accomodate a new engineering wing.
